MOERENHOUT - DE MUYNCK  (Abarth 1000 Monomille)

June 2nd 2001

Guy Moerenhout and the Abarth Monomille 1000. Three cups:
for winning the scratch, the Expert category and class E.

It didn't happen since long that an Abarth went home withthe Winners Cup. Guy Moerenhout, former professional rally driver and Abarthspecialist for about six years now, has won with his co Filip De Muynckin their Abarth Monomille Scorpione GT 1960 the real tough rally Antwerpen-Middelkerke-Antwerpen.

Antwerpen-Middelkerke-Antwerpen is a 450 km rallye all through halfof the northern part of Belgium, with
thiny slippery roads, sometimes gravel and mud. The last because ofthe heavy rains in that weekend. From Antwerpen alongside the border withthe Netherlands all the way to the Belgian Coast and back all through theprovince of East of Flanders. 100 cars took the start, all built before1975. There were Porsches and BMW's, MG's and Triumphs, Lagondas and Bentleys.Only three Abarths: Guy's Monomille and two 696 (at the wheel Koos Visserand in the other car his daughter Elke!).

In the first of the three sections, Guy and Filip made an error andtook a lot of penalty points for arriving late at the Control. After the2nd section they were second (!) and at the finish they had already takenthe 1st place.

Guy: "It's amazing, the car with the smallestengine (1000cc) won the rally. I’m especially happy because most of theriders who participated already last year, tell that it was the toughestrally they’ve been in for years.”
